Caring for the natural environment has a direct impact on the well-being of the people who live there. That is why at GADISA Retail we work to guarantee the best environmental practices in all our operations and we encourage healthy, planet-friendly living and eating habits.

ENVIRONMENTAL SUSTAINABILITY

Our respect for the environment is expressed in our Environmental Policy, which establishes the guidelines for the responsible and sustainable management of resources. Our global sustainability strategy revolves around four key areas that apply across the entire value chain:

WE HELP OUR CUSTOMERS TO RECYCLE

WE HELP OUR CUSTOMERS TO RECYCLE

We are aware of the transformative power of our activity on the generation of household waste. We work to engage our customers in the challenge of sustainability, resource utilisation and recycling. Among other measures:

  • We are committed to bulk product sections or fresh products that reduce the use of packaging.
  • We provide collection points for household batteries or electronic device waste, which are delivered to authorised managers for the recycling of 100% of their components.
  • We have set up recycling stations in various establishments.
CIRCULAR ECONOMY MODEL

CIRCULAR ECONOMY MODEL

At GADISA Retail we apply the principles of the circular economy in all phases of our activity, which allows us to reduce our consumption and reintroduce waste into our value chain. We work to promote a circular production chain and responsible consumption among our customers.

“De residuos a recursos: zero a vertedero” (“From Waste to Resources: Zero to Landfill") Seal: Our efforts have enabled us, for the third consecutive year, to receive this recognition from Grupo Saica, which certifies that more than 95% of the waste generated at our Betanzos logistics centre is reused or recycled. Specifically, the waste recovery system at the centre has enabled nearly 98% of the waste generated in 2024 to be given a second life.

WASTE MANAGEMENT AND RECYCLING

WASTE MANAGEMENT AND RECYCLING

Our internal system for sorting and recycling packaging and packing materials that enables us to increase the recovery of waste. In 2024, we recycled a total of 9,109 tonnes of waste, reintroducing them into our value chain.

  • Plastic recycling: 794.66 tonnes in 2024
  • Cardboard recycling: 8,190.08 tonnes in 2024
  • Wood recycling: 124.31 tonnes in 2024
  • Movement of reusable boxes: 7,781,858 in 2024
CLIMATE CHANGE AND ENERGY EFFICIENCY

CLIMATE CHANGE AND ENERGY EFFICIENCY

At GADISA Retail we want to help with the mitigation of climate change. We work to reduce greenhouse gas emissions associated with our activity and the food value chain.

  • We seek to ensure responsible energy use through our Energy Efficiency Plan. Among other measures, the gradual modernisation of our supermarkets saves up to 40% of energy in each shop.
  • We promote the use of renewable energies and invest in self-sufficient technology to reduce our carbon footprint. Our photovoltaic installations allow us to supply green energy and avoid carbon emissions.
  • We continue to collaborate with the Alianza Galega Polo Clima climate change alliance to make Galicia a leading community in economic and environmental sustainability.

HEALTHY EATING

Promoting complete sustainability throughout our value chain means promoting a healthy lifestyle and eating habits, which have an impact on people’s health and care for the environment.

FOOD

Our product range is the basis of our strategy to promote balanced eating habits. In addition, it allows us to respond to the expectations of the new consumer, who is more environmentally aware.

We work with the Galician Association of Coeliacs (ACEGA)

At GADISA Retail we are aware of the importance of providing our customers with options that suit their dietary needs. We have more than 600 items suitable for people with coeliac disease and we offer ideas for gluten-free recipes through the GADIS Supermarkets website.

Practical experiences: visits to supermarkets

To complement the virtual learning on the interactive platform, we organise guided and interactive visits to the points of sale. The focus is mainly on the fresh product departments: fishmonger’s, greengrocer’s and butcher’s; with the aim of conveying that fresh, locally sourced and seasonal products are more sustainable, healthier, and more environmentally responsible.

Alimentes Programme

Our educational programme "Alimentes Digital" is designed and developed to promote healthy lifestyle habits from childhood, with a focus on balanced nutrition, conscious purchasing, and sustainability.

28,501 students from Galicia and Castilla y León have participated in the Alimentes programme by GADIS during the school year that has just ended. A new record that we view positively, as year after year the number of pupils taking part continues to increase. The number of educational centres enrolled in the programme also increased: 479 schools located in 24 cities in Galicia and Castilla y León.
